Review four stage previews for structure, values, edges and export, then define a practical goal for the next drawing.

Artwork review does not require a vague score. Use stage previews from one completed study to separate structure, values, edges and export, then choose one testable goal for the next drawing. Compare in Photos or a file viewer without assuming automatic scoring or a contact-sheet feature.

## Set up a separate study

Choose a finished study and organise its native file and existing previews in a clearly named folder. Review needs no new canvas; if drawing a comparison, use the original proportions around 1600×1400 px. Use genuine available stages rather than inventing missing process images or borrowing unrelated work.

Check crop, orientation and display width, noting platform recompression versus direct export. Mark mismatched conditions before deciding what each image can demonstrate. Keep the original unchanged and write observations separately rather than silently editing until the reviewed version becomes unclear.

## Choose a study with a clear scope

Choose a simple still life or small scene. Gather structure, blocked-colour, detail and final-export previews. Record missing stages honestly instead of fabricating process images. Preserve the native project and organise separate previews with stage and date names, rather than treating a compressed sharing image as the original.

View all four at equal display size and consistent orientation and crop. Mark detail screenshots separately. Record stage, date and any processing. Comparable conditions help distinguish painting changes from differences caused by scaling, cropping or compression.

## Review proportions and contact before detail

Compare structure and finish using three major anchors, such as cup rim, base and handle attachment. Note whether later detail shifted them. Replace “the shape is wrong” with a specific relationship such as an excessively offset base. Concrete observations can be tested in the next study.

Check contact with the table, ground or neighbouring objects. For floating forms, inspect overlap and shadow origins; for flat forms, distinguish front and back planes. Record the single most consequential issue instead of an endless flaw list. Texture cannot replace sound proportion and space.

## Return to broad masses when judging values

Compare block-in and finish as small images. Check the areas of light, dark and middle value. If detail flattened the image, identify a light mass fragmented or a shadow filled with highlights. Squint or focus on colour masses without requiring an unverified greyscale filter.

Write an actionable statement, such as restricting the deepest dark to contact and one shaded side. Avoid goals like “better colours” that cannot be checked. If values already work, record the successful rule and choose structure or edges as the next focus instead of inventing a problem.

## Judge edges at a normal viewing size

At normal size, identify the most attention-grabbing edge, then inspect it closely to determine whether it is intentional. Soften a secondary edge if all are hard, or clarify a key connection if all are soft. Make local decisions based on position, material and hierarchy rather than blurring everything.

Ask what each texture describes before retaining it. Directionless lines, repeated highlights and stray colours may add only noise. Record one area to simplify next time. Review should not treat every omission as a defect; simplification is a deliberate way to make the image clearer.

## Separate export issues from drawing issues

Compare the actual PNG or JPEG export with the native project at the same display width. Check recompression if only a platform copy is blurry. Do not blame export for detail absent from the project. Record pixel dimensions, format and display location so later comparisons use the same conditions.

Choose one next-study goal and a completion criterion, such as three cups whose rims and bases share coherent axes at small size. Keep it small enough to assess after one session. Save the observation with its previews and reuse the same criterion next time instead of continually changing evaluation language.

## Review and plan the next study

Review the four categories and remove comments lacking a specific location or action. Do not let tiny zoomed-in flaws overturn an effective normal-size image. Keep at most one major observation per category, then choose one for the next study. A longer review is not necessarily a more useful one.

Save observations with their previews, preserving the original finish. Name any revised PNG clearly. After the next study, reuse the same completion criterion rather than replacing it with harsher language. Record observable changes, retained strengths and unresolved issues to build a repeatable learning record.
