Build a wave from dark sea, a lighter wave body and a little foam, practising movement, broken edges and control of white areas.

White lace over blue often suggests sea colour without the weight of curling water. Begin with dark sea and a lit wave body, placing foam where water turns and breaks. Aim for one clear diagonal crest, not white dots everywhere.

## Plan movement with a diagonal

Create a 1600×1000 horizontal dark blue-green canvas. Extend the crest from mid-left to upper-right at about twenty degrees. Let the body occupy roughly the central third, leaving foreground water below and a small calm distant sea above. Sky is optional; focus first on water.

Prepare dark and medium blue-green, pale cyan-gray and warm white. Reserve darkest for beneath the wave and lightest for foam tops. Separate sketch, body and foam to control white coverage. Paint a curved mass, not a mechanically even diagonal ribbon.

## Give the wave values before texture

Paint medium blue-green on the body layer, thickening from about 180 pixels left to 300 right. Add a dark band below the crest following its curl, not across the entire picture. A broad soft pale cyan-gray centre forms the lit plane. Clear light and dark masses establish volume.

Follow the curl’s arc downward and slightly forward. All-horizontal marks resemble flat sea; all-vertical marks resemble a waterfall. Establish direction with pale arcs, then broad colour. Transparency here is painted colour and value, not a transparent canvas.

## Paint the crest as broken large shapes

Use warm white or very pale cyan-gray with a 60–90 pixel brush. Arrange three to five unequal foam groups rather than one continuous rim: largest at the right crest, smaller left groups and blue gaps. Bulge their tops and let lower edges follow the flow.

Treat foam as large shapes before tiny dots. A pale-gray underside gives the largest patch thickness; brightest white belongs only on a short lit edge. If too broad, hide foam and verify the wave body, then remove white rather than darkening the entire background.

## Vary foam-network density

Below the crest, use an 8–15 pixel brush for curved lines extending foam into the body. Form irregular intersections, not circles in every gap. Keep the upper net smaller and denser, stretching and opening downward. Leave two or three clear blue-green areas.

Foreground foam can be broader and flatter along the diagonal flow. Erase a few breaks on the foam layer only, preserving water below. If unfamiliar with local editing, read [Selections and local colour adjustments](<https://allluckly.cn/en/guides/aquarell-selection-local-color/>), though this exercise needs only brush and eraser.

## Concentrate details at the curl

Near the main crest, dot spray around 5–15 pixels, fewer farther away. Avoid evenly lining the whole edge or snowflake-sized marks. Add two or three broad faint reflections in lower dark water following movement; keep distant horizontal strokes sparse and calm.

A little greenish gray in the lit wave body adds variation. Many vivid purples and yellows can disrupt its value order. A limited palette makes overly white foam and heavy shadows easier to judge; see [Limited-palette exercise](<https://allluckly.cn/en/guides/aquarell-limited-palette/>).

## Separate near and distant water

Add a faint distant wave behind, with less width and contrast, nearly horizontal and only one small rise, without full foam detail. Broader foreground strokes and stronger differences establish depth. Dim an overly white rear wave to pale blue-gray and erase crowded foreground lines so attention follows the main diagonal. Depth comes from detail and contrast, not shrinking everything behind.

## Check whether the wave moves forward

Hide the sketch and reduce the image. Check main diagonal, dark-to-light body turn and only then foam detail. Cover some detail by hand; if broad masses still show a curl, structure works. Keep blue-green dominant for water weight rather than too much white.

**Why does the wave look like a cream border?** Usually the white rim is uniform, bulges equal and the wave lacks a dark underside. Break the rim into unequal shapes and establish the crest shadow. More spray cannot fix this structural problem.

**How can the wave look more transparent?** Make the centre lighter and more cyan-green while retaining dark base and foam above. Do not lower the whole wave layer’s opacity and expose distracting background texture. Clear-water appearance is painted value, not the file’s alpha channel.
