Use eight white keys from C to the next C to check five black-key positions, gaps, key-plane perspective and front thickness.

A piano keyboard does not place a black key between every adjacent pair of white keys. Draw one short span from C to the next C, using eight white and five black keys for a countable object illustration. Establish the two-key and three-key groups, then key tops and front thickness. This is neither playing instruction nor a real keyboard specification derived from pixels. Arrange every key and divider manually in Aquarell without assuming an automatic instrument component.

## Establish one plane for eight white keys

Use an approximately 1900×1200 px landscape canvas with a mid blue-grey background. Establish a slightly oblique long keyboard plane, clearer at the near front and narrowing toward the rear, then divide that plane into eight white keys. Label the sketch externally C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C′; labels need not appear in the final image. Separate sketch, white keys, black keys, casing and shadow, leaving reflections out. Count eight cells and check consistent divider directions. If the row resembles an upright fence, expose more key-top depth rather than using a lid to explain an incorrect plane.

## Locate five black keys by their gaps

Place two black keys between C/D and D/E, and three between F/G, G/A and A/B. Leave E/F and B/the next C empty. Use small blocks first and name each white-key gap rather than filling at uniform pitch. The final C′ is this drawing’s endpoint; do not add an extra black key without its corresponding gap. Inspect the wider separation between groups. If they read as three then two, restart the location check from the left C instead of renaming black keys to fit incorrect positions. Verify counts and then give the blocks volume.

## Keep black keys shorter, narrower and raised

Make black keys narrower, shorter toward the viewer and slightly raised above white keys. Draw all five tops, then their short fronts and one visible side, aligned with the keyboard plane. Do not extend them to the white-key fronts or paint them as black-filled gaps. Hide the casing and inspect relative height. If they resemble sugar cubes, correct proportions and depth while reducing excessive thickness. If they resemble holes, expose their tops and weaken surrounding black. Keys within each group should remain similar in size; modest recession does not justify one abruptly becoming half as wide.

## Separate white-key divisions from front thickness

Use warm ivory for white-key tops and fine low-contrast cool-grey divisions that turn into short front faces. Darken fronts slightly without merging them into one thick undivided wall. Match each top divider to its front divider. Simplify white areas behind black keys as long as gaps and groups remain correct. If white keys resemble eight cylinders, reduce individual highlights and preserve shared planar lighting. Narrow divisions that become deep black trenches so white surfaces retain most of the area. This is a fixed exterior view, without demonstrating key depression or simulating sound.

## Light both key colours consistently

Assume upper-left light, with broad pale-grey transitions on white keys. Keep black keys deep blue-grey rather than featureless black, using restrained lighter tops to describe direction. Avoid a white star on every key or five different shadow directions. Put each narrow cast shadow on the appropriate unlit side without crossing an unrelated whole group. Hide reflections and check grouping, then restore them and inspect competition with counts. If tops become busy, remove glints rather than thickening all outlines. Lighting explains height and must not hide correct gaps into a different grouping.

## Let the casing frame rather than alter counts

Add a dark-brown or grey casing behind the keys and narrow end margins without covering the first C or final C′ into half keys. Use a lower shadow to seat the object on a table, avoiding an extra front board that could resemble a ninth key. Count with the casing hidden, restore it and recount: the number should not change. If it resembles a floating drawer, inspect rear attachment and support rather than thickening the frame. No whole piano, pedals or stool is needed; the span should explain its grouping without surrounding accessories identifying it by guesswork.

## Verify the rule in an unshaded position sketch

In a copy, retain only white divisions and five flat black blocks. Count eight white and five black, then read two, gap, three, gap. Compare a separate counterexample with an extra key between E/F, identifying how it breaks this C-to-C′ arrangement; omit it from the original. This tests positions without automatic note recognition or error messages. If grouping works in the sketch but not the finish, inspect overlap, reflection or line weight rather than moving every key. Identify the gap whose visibility was lost so correct construction is not damaged alongside the error.

## Recount by gaps after export

Save the layered original and count eight white and five black keys in the PNG at use size, especially checking that the middle triple has not merged into a black stripe. Restore separation locally or reduce shadow rather than shrinking black keys into dots. Hide unnecessary note labels; layout should still read. Keep the position sketch. A new viewpoint requires reconstructing local planes rather than skewing the old finished image. Record a precise issue, such as an extra shadow between E/F being mistaken for a black key, to target the correct layer.
