Save notes before importing a revised ebook, compare editions through copyright pages and text, and avoid confusing old references with new ones.

English translation of the [Chinese original](<https://allluckly.cn/guides/nasbook-edition-replacement/>), translated on 2026-10-26. Original publication dates, attribution, code and version notes are retained.

When a revised edition arrives, old notes can still refer to old paragraphs. New introductions, chapter divisions and rewritten text can change locations. Use an annotated old book and a new edition to practise preserving records, checking differences and choosing the main reading copy. You do not need to delete the old book first.

## Record the old edition and reading state

Inspect title or copyright pages and note author, translator, edition year and source, then record current chapter and a nearby quotation. Titles and covers are identification clues, without establishing edition equivalence. Across phone and tablet, identify the device with the latest reading and notes, including offline changes.

Keep a separate old file with an understandable edition or date. Do not overwrite its only path immediately, since related records may still depend on it. Keep the old edition readable while checking the new one, deciding how to organise the old entry only after verification.

## Export important notes and reference text

Export valuable highlights and notes as readable files using available controls. Reopen them in Files and search a distinctive comment, checking title, quotation and explanation. A share sheet or preview is not final storage; complete the save to a location you will retain.

Record important chapters and short quotations as cross-edition clues. Percentages and screen pages can shift when content is added. Readable export is independent preservation, without promising whole-library restoration or automatic remapping. Retain both book files and application records separately.

## Compare the new edition outside the app

Inspect its copyright page and contents for added introductions, appendices, images or chapters. Find an old annotated quotation and compare context and wording. Typo and cover corrections may have less impact than redivided chapters or a rewritten translation, which should be managed with clear edition distinctions.

Record PDF counts and printed numbering, or EPUB chapter structure. A larger file need not be more complete; added fonts and pictures affect size too. Check beginning, middle and end for new omissions or damage before bringing the edition into Book Isle.

## Treat duplicate suggestions carefully

Choose the new file in local import and inspect duplicate or multiple-format suggestions as possible relationships. Judge whether editions need independent handling with the controls available. If uncertain, cancel and compare further rather than merging everything to complete the task quickly.

Use recognisable display names or an external old-versus-revised inventory. Two matching titles may intentionally preserve different texts rather than represent accidental duplicates. Verify the actual edition reached by each card before adjusting covers and sorting, so visual organisation does not hide identity confusion.

## Reestablish locations through content

Find chapters and quotations from old records in the new edition, then recreate necessary bookmarks. A note can explain the old counterpart. If wording changed, read the new context and decide whether your comment still applies instead of copying it mechanically into a different argument.

Keep changed quotations with their old-edition attribution where appropriate. For scholarly, work or public references, record edition and source. Layout-related screen-page changes and actual textual revision are separate phenomena; similar progress percentages cannot establish the same passage after new introductions or chapter splits.

## Verify the new edition on another device

Finish identification on the main device before handling reading-data sync and file transfer. The other device needs the same new file independently. Matching title and progress do not prove that the full book transferred. Inspect copyright, contents and new material to rule out an old copy with a matching cover.

Check and sync devices in sequence rather than editing both simultaneously. If old and new locations appear mixed, preserve important notes and screenshots before investigating relationships. Uninstalling or clearing the sync directory cannot automatically identify which text belongs to which edition.

## Organise the old edition after verification

Once the new copy reads well, important notes are retained and the other device identifies it correctly, decide whether to keep the old shelf entry. Before deletion, read the confirmation for effects on entry, files and records. If unclear, retain it with a clear name or label rather than rushing cleanup.

Write a short handoff record: old file location, new filename, migrated key references and notes still requiring review. It supports a future third edition. Successful replacement means clear content and record provenance, rather than a shelf reduced to one apparently newest cover.
