Connect an in-text citation, bibliography entry, original source and relevant passage, verifying edition and support rather than stopping at a matching title.

English translation of the [Chinese original](<https://allluckly.cn/guides/nasbook-reference-list-source-trace/>), translated on 2026-11-03. Original publication dates, attribution, code and version notes are retained.

A matching article title completes only part of reference identification; support for a book’s sentence requires the relevant source passage. Build a manual chain from in-text citation to bibliography and an authorised source. Unlike recording provenance for your own excerpt, this checks where the author’s cited support actually resides.

## Begin with one in-text citation

Select one claim with an author-year, number or note marker, retaining adjacent explanation and a bookmark. Record edition, section, anchor and marker, plus PDF file page. Define the support question before picking an interesting bibliography entry. Complete one chain before expanding rather than marking the entire reference list important.

## Match the marker to the bibliography entry

Locate the entry using available contents, search or pages and match number or author-year precisely. Distinguish same-author/same-year entries through suffixes, title and venue. Note secondary citation chains. Automatic citation links are not assumed; manual navigation can establish a valid correspondence when it is explicitly recorded.

## Retain enough identity information

Record author, title, year, venue and page range, preserving any supplied DOI or stable identifier without inventing one when absent. Retain abbreviations for later catalogue verification. Separate translated and original titles. Keep enough identity information for retrieval rather than copying the entire bibliography or replacing precise titles with broad translated paraphrases.

## Verify metadata through an external reliable entry point

Use a publisher, library catalogue or Crossref metadata search as appropriate; Book Isle is not described as an academic-search database. Compare full title, year, venue and version. Crossref discovery is neither full-text access nor automatic quality approval. Lack of a DOI does not prove nonexistence; other reliable identifiers can locate books and older or different materials.

## Separate identification from obtaining the text

Record metadata matched before asking whether authorised full text is available. Abstracts, previews and reviews are not the original full text. Retain access route and date for library or open versions. Mark unavailable rather than unreliable solely because access is restricted, leaving an honest next step instead of a falsely completed verification chain.

## Confirm the version before importing a reading copy

Verify file identity, completeness and version—preprint, publication, revision or translation—before import. Page and table numbers can differ. Inspect import-preview identity and duplicate choices carefully. Keep the original as a citation reference when a reading conversion changes layout; a new format does not establish the same content edition.

## Find the passage relevant to the cited claim

Search relevant topic terms or cited table numbers and open full context. A keyword match alone is not support. Distinguish background discussion of others from the source’s own results, reading methods and limits as needed for the specific question. Use contents and pages when search fails without assuming OCR or a text layer.

## Compare support scope, not merely similar wording

Compare population, time, conditions and strength between the book’s claim and the source passage. Record an expansion from sample association to universal cause only after checking omitted qualifications. Do not select merely agreeable wording or exempt authoritative sources from comparison. A matching title and related sentence may establish only partial relevance or unresolved scope.

## Leave anchors at all four links

Record book location, bibliography entry, source identity and source-passage location with a plain completion status. Keep full external URLs and text anchors, adding PDF page distinctions when needed. Manual bookmarks and notes suffice without automatic cross-book backlinks. Recheck anchors after file changes; progress sync does not rematch every edition and citation.

## Close honestly and choose the next reference

State separately whether metadata matched, full text was obtained, a passage was found and support scope is clear, retaining specific next steps. Do not reduce these stages to one true/false label or share your summary as source wording. Verify all anchors in backed-up notes and retain source files separately. Crossref’s official guidance supports metadata retrieval, not guaranteed free full text.

Readers supply their sources and check controls in the installed version. No step-by-step physical-device testing is claimed.
