Draw a simplified feather with a curved shaft, controlled edge notches and restrained detail, keeping the overall direction clear.

A feather is a useful exercise in organising shapes around one curved shaft. Simplify its branches into an outline and selected notches, coordinating direction and detail. Draw manually as a decorative illustration rather than a precise biological specimen.

## Establish the shaft and proportions

Use a 600 by 1000 pixel portrait canvas and a gently curving open shaft. Establish the bare base and feathered region, leaving generous margins. Keep a reference copy on a draft layer. Let the sides differ slightly while following one overall bend instead of appearing as unrelated leaves.

## Build one coherent vane outline

Draw a single closed vane silhouette, tapering at tip and base with few key turns. Inspect its shape before making cuts or adding strands. Keep the shaft above it, following the visual centre without forcing perfect bilateral equality. Starting with many fine lines makes both shape judgement and object selection harder.

## Suggest barbs through selected notches

Add three or four shallow edge notches angled toward the tip, varying their depth. Test one on a copy before adding more. Deep cuts can turn the vane into separate leaflets, while many cuts make it noisy. Recheck after reduction and preserve uninterrupted edge stretches. Keep the original uncut silhouette for comparison.

## Coordinate interior lines with the shaft

Draw selected fine curves from near the shaft toward the edge, letting some stop short. Shorten lines near the tip and vary density. Keep their weight and contrast restrained so the result does not resemble a fish skeleton. Work side by side, adjusting starts and curvature around bends rather than repeating one identical arc.

## Use a small value range

Use a main fill, a slender darker region near the shaft and a lighter side if helpful. Establish these as simple shapes before gradients. Limit contrast in fine lines so colour, notches and details do not all compete. Check translucent versions on different backgrounds and hide lines or shading separately to assess their contribution.

## Save simplified and detailed versions

Export and inspect the tip and bare shaft at a small size. Keep a simplified outline-and-shaft version alongside the detailed one. Adjust composition before distorting the feather to fit a narrow column. Check pale areas on light backgrounds. When revising the shaft, update surrounding line directions in both versions.

## Remove half the details as a comparison

Hide alternating interior lines and remove one or two small notches in a copy. Compare lightness and the shaft’s bend. Separately straighten the shaft slightly while keeping colour unchanged to isolate structural effects. Record details that merge at small size and simplify the tip if needed rather than adding progressively finer branches.

## Restore clarity through the silhouette

If it resembles a leaf, inspect proportions and the bare shaft before adding lines. For a fishbone effect, soften interior contrast and reduce heavy joins at the shaft. Simplify small sharp notches that export as spikes. For selection difficulties, inspect layer locking and stacking rather than repeatedly tapping and accidentally moving the silhouette.
