Connected objects and occlusion
Draw a belt buckle in Aquarell: seat the prong through a strap hole
Use the overlap order of frame, prong, hole and returning strap end to draw a fastened belt detail.

A belt buckle may look like a simple metal frame, yet drawings often leave its prong floating, hole misplaced or strap end passing through an impossible layer. Draw a simplified fastened single-prong buckle detail, explaining connections through broad leather and narrow metal overlaps. Neither a whole waist, branding nor dressing instructions are required. Check each path manually in Aquarell, then develop materials.
Choose an oblique view that reveals frame thickness
Use an approximately 1800×1300 px landscape canvas with a pale grey-green background. Run the belt roughly horizontally, placing the buckle left of centre. Sketch an oblique rounded rectangular metal frame with a little near-edge thickness and a narrower far edge. Separate sketch, frame, lower strap, returned end, prong and shadow. Establish compatible inner and outer frame perspective without highlights. Compare corners and opposite directions if distorted. If it resembles a hanging picture frame, reveal more tabletop-oriented top surface and clarify where the belt passes through.
Separate fixed-end and free-end paths
Use deep ochre-brown for leather folded around the fixed crossbar, and establish the adjustable strap passing through the frame and emerging as a free end. Give the two paths different sketch colours so they do not exchange identities at crossings. The returned end needs continuous width and explainable occlusion, not growth from a solid metal side. Reconnect the folded fixed end if two unrelated strips appear. Remove unnecessary loops if it resembles a knot. Replace diagnostic colours with values and boundaries in the finish rather than arrows explaining incorrect paths.
Lead the prong from its bar into one chosen hole
Choose one elliptical used hole on the adjustable strap, aligning its long axis with the leather plane. Lead the prong from near its fixed bar into that hole. It may tilt slightly but must not simply lie flat on the leather while supposedly piercing it. Occlude a small portion of the hole edge with the prong, then conceal its tip appropriately beneath leather or frame for this angle. If hole and prong merely sit beside one another, adjust their positions to intersect instead of darkening the hole as a substitute. Solve this used hole prior to adding spare holes.
Place spare holes along the strap centreline
After the used hole works, add two or three spare holes on the exposed end, following its centre path and narrowing or shrinking gently with perspective. Keep them inside the edges and on the curved surface rather than forcing a straight row. Hide holes to inspect complete leather, then restore them and reject black-button appearances. Spare holes may be quieter than the used one. Reassess tail direction and perspective if spacing collapses at a bend instead of straightening the entire row. This count is an illustration choice, not a real belt sizing specification.
Use different value scales for leather and metal
Use mid ochre-brown on the leather top, deeper brown at its bend and a narrow dark edge rather than wooden-plank thickness. Use grey-blue metal with upper-left light and lower-right dark, its bright bands narrower and crisper than leather highlights. Shared light does not mean identical white outlines on both materials. Reduce sharp white leather reflections if toy-like; restore a few crisp metal value transitions if rubber-like. Suggest only a short quiet edge seam, not stitches around every hole or decoration obscuring actual prong entry.
Keep overlap shadows narrow and definite
Add a short contact shadow where the returned end overlaps lower leather and only necessary dark lines where frame covers strap. Concentrate the deepest accents at prong entry and the fixed-end fold, not equal black strips along every edge. Hide ground shadow to check component occlusion, then restore it to establish placement. Check contact near the bar if the tail floats. Quiet spare holes and seams and reopen frame negative spaces if everything merges into brown darkness. Repair incorrect paths and layer order rather than adding shadow to compensate.
Read hole entry without material effects
Save a structural version with grey leather, dark-grey frame and the used hole alone, omitting spare holes, texture and seams. Trace fixed bar, prong root, hole entry and returned end. If only the colour image is readable, colour may be replacing real occlusion; repair the structural version. Write layer-order notes beside the sketch if helpful, then remove them from the finish. Adjust one junction per comparison and check whether the hole really intersects the prong path. A changed viewing angle needs new hole ellipses and frame thickness, not merely a resized image retaining old shading.
Check that export retains a functional-looking prong
Save the layered original and inspect prong root, used hole and strap endpoint in a PNG at actual size. If the prong becomes a bright decoration on leather, strengthen local occlusion and contact rather than thickening all metal edges. Lighten nearby leather if deep shadow swallows the used hole instead of enlarging it implausibly. Keep the tail endpoint inside the frame and separate from background lines. Record a specific fault such as a complete hole edge incorrectly visible beside the prong. Judge a readable fastened single-prong exterior, not load capacity, fit or fastening security.
