Draw a waffle in Aquarell: make its grid recessed rather than raised
Use twelve wells in three columns and four rows to study crossing ridges, inner-wall light, grid perspective and body thickness without through-holes.
On this page
Reversed waffle shading can resemble twelve blocks arranged on a board. Invent a rectangular waffle with three columns and four rows, showing raised ridges enclosing recessed wells rather than holes exposing the background. Counts and shape are drawing rules, not a recipe or baking instruction. Separate grid, recesses and outer edge into layers and check their orientation and light manually.
Establish the whole top and body thickness
Use an approximately 1700×1400 px landscape canvas with a grey-blue background. Draw an oblique rectangular top, more open nearby and narrower farther away. Add thin front and side faces, gently rounding corners while retaining the rectangle. Separate sketch, body, grid, wells and texture. Inspect the warm-brown mass alone. If paper-flat, establish thickness and contact rather than relying on deep wells for false body volume. Share vertices between top and sides without assembly gaps. Leave toppings out so one body plane and edge remain the task.
Divide twelve positions into three columns and four rows
Within the top guide, divide width into three columns and depth into four rows, twelve positions total. Align corresponding boundaries lightly, compressing distance consistently rather than enlarging the final row. Count columns and rows separately and multiply instead of counting all lines. Leave an outer rim and keep cells inside the silhouette. If it reads as four columns by three rows, clarify the chosen width/depth directions with temporary labels. This count governs the current sketch; deleting a row later requires changing the description rather than allowing text and image to disagree.
Build continuous ridges around recessed wells
Widen divisions into narrow connected ridges, including intersections, then inset a smaller floor in each cell with visible inner walls. These are not twelve black squares placed on top. Complete one near well with four walls and a floor, then repeat the relationship. Shared ridge tops should not become doubled independent frames around every cell. If twelve separate biscuits, reduce independent cast shadows and connect the grid. If wire mesh, expose ridge width and warm colour instead of black lines alone. Every well has a floor and must not reveal background colour.
Shade inner walls by orientation, not cell number
Assume upper-left light, with lighter inner walls facing it, darker walls turned away and a slightly deeper warm-brown floor. Test recession in one well first. Avoid pure-white/black half-cells or mechanically blackening the upper-left corner as proof of a hollow. Compare wall orientations in a small hollow-box sketch, using an external light arrow if needed. Keep one light source rather than a different cast-shadow direction for every well. If cells read as blocks, repair inner-wall connections and shadow ownership instead of endlessly darkening floors. This describes visual recesses, not real baking doneness.
Inspect grid orientation against the outer boundary
Give near cells more visible depth and compress them into distance, turning each inset floor with its cell. An oblique outer frame cannot contain twelve viewer-facing square stickers. Hide texture and compare two-colour ridges/floors down one column and across one row. Correct four corners of an anomalously tilted cell instead of outlining it heavily. Simplify distant inner-wall detail while retaining row membership. Perspective compression does not justify accidentally omitting a well; retain the twelve-cell rule and choose a larger display if needed.
Keep crumb texture subordinate to connected ridges
Use gold, ochre-brown and restrained grey-brown without pure-white ridge outlines. Add a few small breaks and low-contrast grains near the outer edge, allowing mild floor mottling without the same black dot in every well. If a plastic tray, soften perfectly equal widths and sharp reflections with slight irregularity. If cracked ground, reduce missing chunks and restore ridge continuity. Compare texture hidden and restored. Natural variation must not accidentally destroy structure or excuse a missing ridge unless a deliberately broken state is redrawn.
Use a raised-block counterexample to diagnose shading
Change only one near well into a raised block in a copy, with a lit top and exterior shadow. Compare its connections and shadows with neighbouring recesses. Keep the original recessed rather than mixing the counterexample into twelve wells while calling them one structure. Do not change background, light or edge colour simultaneously. If ambiguous, hide all texture and use simple walls/floors. This is personal image reasoning without automatic relief recognition or copying a branded waffle. Consistent floors, walls and ridges are the goal.
Recount wells and exclude through-holes after export
Save the layered original and count three columns/four rows in the PNG. Check that a distant floor has not matched the background into a through-hole; adjust it or its wall locally instead of darkening the whole waffle. If ridges break at reduction, remove fine texture and separate values rather than adding a cross ridge for complexity. Keep the texture-free framework. Reconstruct cell compression for a new viewpoint instead of freely stretching the old image. Record a definite location, such as a disconnected floor and rear wall in column two, row three. Count, recession and thickness should all remain legible.
