Panels and visual judgements
ManYue inset-panel reading: check boundaries and viewpoint
Distinguish outer panels, enlarged details, screens and remembered insets using boundaries and surrounding actions, without counting a repeated detail as another event.
On this page
A small image inside a larger panel may be a close-up, a screen or another moment. Reading by placement alone can count one action twice. Choose an already-read inset in ManYue and manually identify its bounds, observer and information source. Use the app to inspect and revisit the page without assuming automatic panel recognition or viewpoint interpretation.
Choose a page with intact inset boundaries
Choose an authorised completed page containing an outer panel and one or two insets. Inspect it whole rather than starting with an online crop. Record edition, chapter, outer figures and inset position, ensuring zoom has not hidden borders. Resolve missing source edges before interpreting visual guidance. Begin with a simple entry and exit rather than a dense collage. File-image count does not establish the number of authored panels; the subject is relationships within the page.
Describe outer and inner images separately
Describe outer people, place and action in one sentence, then each inset’s objects, orientation and wording. Do not yet join them into a sequence or call them memories. Use personal labels with locations such as upper right, within the phone or beside the hand. For an unbordered inset, describe its separation from the background and retain uncertainty. A repeated hand detail and a different hand need sleeve, shape and contact checks; proximity does not establish identity.
Check whether a close-up repeats one state
Compare distinctive cracks, finger contact and orientation to test whether the inset clarifies an existing state. In an invented example, an envelope seal close-up need not mean another letter was picked up. An intact-to-torn seal suggests change but still needs adjacent evidence. Record repeated state, new state or unresolved. Panel size does not establish importance or duration, and a close-up can add information without adding an action.
Identify screens, mirrors and observer layers
For a phone, monitor or mirror inset, inspect frame, reflections and gaze to distinguish a direct scene from an image through a medium. A screen may contain a recording, call or photograph, not necessarily live action. Mirroring within the scene is not proof of a flipped source file. Separate the observer from the depicted person; reader-visible details need not be known to the character. Retain alternatives where the medium is unclear instead of expecting the app to decide.
Use neighbouring panels to establish entry and return
Read at least one panel before and after, checking resumed action, location and wording for memory or imagination. Different borders or colour are clues, not a universal temporal code. Separate a stationary character’s present action from imagined content rather than inserting the latter into actual events. Retain both page references if the inset continues across a turn; a turn does not itself return the story to the present. Leave uncertain relations unresolved and prefer context over a quick scan.
Compare what two readings would predict
For one uncertain inset, compare a repeated-detail reading with a later-action reading and state their evidence needs. A second door opening should involve relevant state or position change; a lock close-up may not. Seek distinguishing details and leave the issue open if absent. Personal habits do not prescribe inset-before-outer or the reverse; inspect layout, connectors and dialogue. Alternative readings test evidence rather than multiply unsupported plot events.
Save a reference to the complete composition
Save a supported page bookmark and externally record outer/inset labels, positions and nearby objects. Leave and return to confirm access to the whole page rather than a collected crop. Attach chapter and full-page references to image favourites because a detail alone cannot establish its outer relationship. Tall images need stable landmarks as well as progress. Recheck borders after source or edition changes; matching titles do not guarantee identical insets, cropping or coordinates, or automatic inset-level positioning.
Finish the boundary record and check misreadings
Finish with descriptions, a relationship judgement, distinguishing evidence and unresolved points. A repeated object requires a state-change check before counting another action. A person on a screen needs medium and timing checks before being placed in the same scene. If your retelling adds an action, check for a counted close-up. Explain what information the inset adds without supplying unstated facts, retaining full-page access so rereading tests the relationship rather than admiring an isolated detail.
