ManYue short-comic descriptions: retain essential information without inventing plot

Write an authorised ordered description separating dialogue, visible action, composition and interpretation, then check it page by page and mark uncertainty.

English translation of the Chinese original, translated on . Original publication dates, attribution, code and version notes are retained.

Describing a comic to someone temporarily unable to view it requires conveyed information rather than a pile of adjectives. Read your own or an authorised short sample in ManYue and write the description externally. This is not an in-app OCR, automatic alternative-text or screen-reader integration tutorial, and a personal draft does not constitute complete accessibility validation.

Establish permission and the reader’s task

Choose one or two self-created or expressly describable pages and record edition, chapter, page identity and sharing permission. State whether the task is understanding plot, discussing composition or locating an object, since essential detail differs. Reading permission is not public adaptation permission; follow private-draft agreements. Retain work name, figure labels and spoiler boundary without later revelations. Start small rather than claiming the description replaces the entire comic or serves everyone’s needs.

List order and overall setting first

Inspect the full page and list setting, present figures and panel labels in an established order; mark uncertain order instead of choosing arbitrarily. One overview can precede panel actions without repeating every background. Label intercut locations so a listener does not merge spaces. An invented example describes two people beside an indoor table, A offering a sealed letter, B not taking it, then the letter on the table. These are visible states, not a supplied motive. The overview should orient, not prejudge the ending.

Separate dialogue from visible facts

Quote only necessary short dialogue, identifying speaker, narration and uncertain balloon ownership. Thoughts are not spoken to others. Use observable action such as a hand above the letter, not intentional refusal. Describe brows, mouth or posture and label emotional inference separately. Mark unreadable text unconfirmed instead of supplying quoted plot assumptions. Label compressed dialogue paraphrase and retain negation/conditions so not every sentence in the description appears to be verbatim speech.

Include composition that affects understanding

Include essential occlusion, gaze, distance relations and prop positions without pixel-by-pixel detail. Explain a reader-visible envelope mark that a character cannot see instead of assigning that knowledge to them. Add available shape/text cues where colour encodes identity, simplifying decoration. Describe spreads, silent pauses or size relationships where they affect information timing, without assigning seconds by panel count. Separate content description from composition discussion to avoid overloading one sentence with unrelated detail.

Hide the image and test the description

Leave the image and read only your text, checking consistent labels, object origins and intelligible order. Remove unsupported actions or mark them unknown rather than retaining them for fluency. An authorised collaborator may identify unclear points without private-library access, but do not claim audience validation without feedback. If too long, remove irrelevant texture before negation, attribution or scene transitions. Brevity should come from selecting information, not losing comprehension conditions.

Return and proofread each item against the page

Keep a supported bookmark and external page identity, leave the reader and reopen it, then check dialogue, action and composition sentence by sentence in panel order. Exclude later knowledge inserted earlier and wording from another edition. Distinguish quotations from description and date the draft with edition scope where useful. Recheck updates without automatic-sync assumptions. Share authorised text and necessary attribution rather than attaching the volume; label personal diagrams as not original screenshots.

Handle sound lettering and wordless information

A printed bang or rustle is lettering, not actual sound played by the description. Record the word, location and supported source as needed; for an unknown source, describe the sound lettering without inventing a slamming door or shout. Wordless panels can carry gaze, object changes or pauses and should not disappear merely for lacking dialogue. Identify explicit wording versus personal pacing behind any duration description, without one-second-per-panel assumptions. Preserve sound representation and silence without making undrawn actions sound established.

Finish a checkable description without invented plot

Completion gives the reader who, where, action, wording and uncertainty without losing essential composition. Emotional labels may be interpretation, and fluent prose may hide invented actions, so recheck the image. Retain uncertainty for blurred lettering rather than claiming completeness. Note one information-selection improvement for later adaptation to actual reader needs. The exercise communicates image content without claiming all app or work accessibility capabilities are implemented.

Checked on November 6, 2026: Apple public version information lists ManYue 2.0.4, requiring iOS / iPadOS 15.0 or later. Feature scope follows the official App Store description and the installed version. This article provides reading and checking methods you can perform; it does not claim step-by-step physical-device or private-server testing. Manual records, external tools and actually visible controls are identified separately, and personal analysis or code observations are not presented as verified automatic capabilities.

For image-description concepts, see W3C: Complex Images. This writing and proofreading workflow is a personal exercise, not a claim that ManYue implements the external draft as alternative text.
