Paint desert dunes in Aquarell: connect curved planes with crests and shadows

Paint three dune groups with lit and shaded slopes and restrained foreground ripples to establish direction and scale.

Dunes can describe space through the meeting of curved planes alone. Paint three overlapping groups, establish the crest direction and separate their lit and shaded slopes. Keep small ripples in the foreground and simplify the distance instead of striping the whole desert equally.

Set up a separate study

An approximately 1800×1200 px landscape canvas suits three dune groups. Reserve sky above and a broad near slope. Separate sky, each distance and ripples. Test broad planes and fine near marks, but leave texture empty until overlap and lighting work.

Vary the three crests, clarify foreground overlap and reserve the strongest dark nearby. Save a three-mass structure without black crest outlines. Later, hide ripples and compare against it to distinguish weak slope values from texture that points in the wrong spatial direction.

Design three crests with different rhythms

Place the horizon near the upper third. Use a low distant dune, a broader middle crest and a foreground ridge entering diagonally. Avoid parallel crests or a single shared intersection. Overlap the groups so the curves remain connected while establishing depth.

Use muted grey-blue sky and pale ochre sand. Test three values, reserving the deepest for the foreground shaded slope and reducing distant contrast. Let adjacent planes define each crest rather than outlining every ridge with a dark line.

Keep every slope under one light source

With light from the upper left, use warm pale-yellow lit slopes and cooler muted brown-violet shade. Keep one lighting rule as each crest turns. Use broad transitions within slopes, clearer near the ridge and softer below. Resolve the largest dune before extending the system into the distance.

If a shaded slope resembles brown cloth, vary its lower boundary and connect it to neighbouring sand. Do not add identical black shadows beneath every dune. Some joins need soft value changes and others clearer overlap edges; distinguishing them makes the terrain continuous.

Vary the width of lit crest edges

Reserve a narrow light beside selected crests, wider nearby and thinner or broken in the distance. It indicates a meeting of slopes, not a glowing tube. Check that it follows the crest’s turn and omit less important sections so not every curve competes equally.

Keep one sharp crest segment and soften others. A paper-cut appearance often comes from uniformly hard edges and flat shadows. Reduce contrast in one group and add broad variation inside its slope. Preserve a clear near edge rather than blurring the entire image.

Use foreground ripples to suggest scale

Place a few short curved ripples on the lit foreground slope, following its local surface and compressing their spacing into the distance. Keep them only slightly darker than the sand, leaving gaps between groups. Begin with five or six and preserve the larger light and shadow masses.

Keep distant texture faint. If adding scale cues, choose footprints or one small shrub rather than both. Shrinking footprints and a grounded shrub must follow the space. Save a pure-dune version first and compare whether the addition strengthens depth instead of merely decorating it.

Troubleshoot terrain that reads as flat waves

Hide the ripples and assess the three masses. Check overlap, foreground area and consistent shaded-side direction. Actually interrupt a middle crest behind the foreground dune rather than darkening every shadow. Restore texture only after the broader terrain reads clearly.

For colour variety, add gentle warm yellow in light and muted cool grey in shade while preserving values. Mute an overly orange middle area against the grey-blue sky. For a dawn version, reconsider the light and shadows before changing colours instead of simply recolouring every shape pink.

Review and plan the next study

Review terrain small, slope joins at normal size and ripples crossing crests close up. Keep distant dunes simpler than the foreground. Clarify one useful narrow light and quiet the rest, avoiding glowing crests that divide the desert into unrelated flat shapes.

Export texture-free and finished PNGs, retaining separate dune groups. Next, reverse the light with crests unchanged and rebuild shadow areas and lit edges. Go beyond swapping colours: reconsider transitions and shadows to test the new lighting relationship.
