Reading precision
ManYue mixed-orientation comics: keep anthology inserts readable
Select representative portrait, landscape and tall pages in an anthology, compare layouts and zoom, and preserve complete artwork rather than forcing every page into one shape.
On this page
Anthologies and art collections often mix portrait story pages, landscape illustrations and tall appendices. Choose a main layout around the book’s dominant form, then make deliberate exceptions for unusual pages. The goal is to preserve complete artwork and natural reading order, rather than giving every image the same shape.
Choose an anchor for each page type
Find a normal portrait page, a landscape scene and a genuinely tall appendix if present. Record their chapters and visible content. Confirm that unusual dimensions are intentional rather than corruption or accidental combinations. Use bookmarks or chapter navigation to return to the same anchors after each layout change; do not invent a tall-page test if the book has none.
Choose the main direction from the story
Use dialogue and panel flow to determine the story’s intended direction. One landscape insert does not require changing the entire book to horizontal continuous scrolling. Start with a simple page-based layout for a predominantly traditional anthology. Record that baseline and inspect each short story’s actual arrangement when different stories use different conventions.
Check every edge of a wide illustration
At the wide illustration, inspect all four edges before zooming. Check titles, signatures and corner details, then rotate or zoom temporarily and return to the whole image. Blank space can be a reasonable consequence of aspect ratio. If a visible setting splits wide images, decide whether that suits this illustration. Preserve its intended left and right relationships.
Preserve a tall appendix’s sequence
Read a tall appendix from top to bottom, confirming access to the middle and end. Compare a vertical continuous mode if your version offers it. The layout changes presentation, not the source images. For multiple tall images, inspect joins for repeated or missing text. Note the chapter before switching modes and restore the normal story layout afterwards if appropriate.
Compare automatic and explicit choices
If your installed version offers automatic mode selection by image proportions, record the baseline and inspect all anchors with it enabled. Automatic geometry cannot infer every narrative intention, so explicit choices remain useful when one result is unsuitable. Skip this comparison if the option is absent. Do not resize the source simply to influence automatic layout decisions.
Check the return from zooming
Zoom into a figure or small caption on the wide illustration, restore the whole image, and move to the next ordinary page. Check whether gestures pan the zoomed image or turn pages, following the current interface guidance. Establish a dependable way back to ordinary reading instead of expecting every page to fill the screen automatically.
Check resume after two kinds of pages
Exit and reopen once from a normal portrait page and once from the tall appendix. Record both image identity and visible section. Different layouts can represent position differently, so matching numbers alone do not prove matching content. Use chapter and bookmark anchors when needed. Keep the file and entry unchanged during this comparison.
Questions and completion criteria
Why is there empty space around a wide page? Preserving its aspect ratio may require it. Must every image be converted to one proportion? No; that can crop or distort content. Finish with a practical story layout, a way to inspect wide-page detail, and a reliable tall-appendix position. All anchors should remain complete and easy to revisit.
