ManYue reading layouts: direction, single pages, double pages and spreads
Match reading mode to page order and device orientation, distinguishing original spreads, paired pages and zoom to establish a reading baseline for each book.
On this page
A phone may suit close single-page reading; landscape iPad may reveal spread compositions better. Smooth reading depends on source order, direction and per-screen layout working together. First verify single-page order, then add double-page and zoom options gradually to isolate their effects.
Prepare content that is easy to verify
Choose a familiar comic with continuous dialogue, single pages and an obvious wide composition. Record chapter and pages, then verify order and completeness before changing settings. Broken dialogue in single-page mode calls for checking files, not hiding the problem with reader options.
Check rotation lock and choose your usual posture. Landscape and portrait can have different image counts; after configuring one, physically rotate and check the other. Layout changes affect display, not original images or source-file binding.
Choose the original reading direction first
Open Reading Settings and inspect Reading Mode. Options include left-to-right, right-to-left and top-to-bottom; some turn by screen, others scroll continuously. Begin paginated work in the appropriate paged direction and vertically continuous content in vertical scrolling mode.
Use the work’s actual narrative order, not guesses based on language or cover style. Test two or three dialogue pages against gestures and page turns. If tap zones feel reversed, adjust tap options and repeat the same test. Change one dimension at a time to distinguish direction from numbering problems.
Arrange single and double pages in landscape
In paged mode, inspect image counts for portrait and landscape. Keep portrait at one, try two in landscape and revisit familiar pages. A separate cover affects pairing; if the text starts on the opposite side, every pair can shift.
If First Page Separate appears, use it to check post-cover pairing. Two images side by side do not prove a correct spread: check continuity across the centre. One premerged wide image differs from two separate pages and should not be forced into a pair with another page.
Check wide images and zoom details
Paged layouts offering Smart Double Page can display wide images alone, useful for merged original spreads. Test a clear wide sample before retaining the setting. Judge composition, readable text and correct next-page pairing, not whether every screen is filled.
Zoom temporarily for small text or details, then return to the whole page before turning. Use only double-tap or long-press options actually available; gestures may vary by mode. A zoom-dependent clarity change does not permanently enhance or resave the original.
Example: settings for a short comic with spreads
Suppose image one is the cover, two to five are text pages and six is a full spread. Verify portrait single-page order, remembering page three’s dialogue and image six’s composition. In landscape double-page mode, check separate-cover handling and page-three pairing. Confirm the wide image is not compressed into an unreadable half-screen.
For a book-only adjustment, check whether the setting targets the book, device or all books. When scoped options exist, select explicitly and test another book briefly. Do not treat a screenshot’s fixed values as universal best settings.
Final checks and common questions
Check ordinary pages and wide images in both orientations, reopen the book and verify progress and settings. If numbering changes with modes, compare actual images. Record direction, image counts by orientation and cover handling for future troubleshooting.
Does a character split by the centre always mean an app bug?
Check whether the source has two scans or one merged wide image, then inspect first-page pairing. File splitting and page order matter too. Single-page mode reveals the original data before targeted layout changes.
Why did changing one book affect others?
You may have changed global or device settings rather than a book-specific option. Check scope, restore the general baseline if necessary and configure the unusual book separately. Avoid changing several places at once or the active setting becomes unclear.
