ManYue appearance: dark mode, backgrounds and screen display
Adjust the app theme and reader display separately. Use a grayscale sample to check night dimming, background and system brightness together without losing image detail.
On this page
At night, menus may be dark while a comic page remains a bright-white scan. These are two display layers. ManYue's appearance settings control the app theme, while the reader may also offer page brightness or background options. This article adjusts them separately to retain readability and make the scope of each change clear.
Find a page with gray tones and small text first
Choose a page containing black lines, pale-gray backgrounds, white space, and small dialogue. It is better for judging contrast than a solid-black cover. Record system brightness and the environment. Do not enable system color filters, change the theme, and adjust page brightness simultaneously, or you will not know which change lost detail.
Place the screen where you normally read and check whether pale-gray lines and speech-bubble text remain recognizable. The goal is comfortable clarity in the current environment, not minimum brightness. Example values are only comparison starting points. Panels, ambient light, and personal perception differ, so no brightness number suits everyone.
Choose a theme in Appearance
Go to Settings → Appearance, find Theme Mode, and choose System, Light, or Dark as needed. Return to the library to inspect menus, cards, and page backgrounds, then enter the reader. Theme colors mainly affect the app interface; they do not automatically repaint white paper, skin, or skies inside comics as dark colors.
When following the system, the app may change as system appearance changes. To compare a fixed effect, temporarily choose Dark explicitly, then return to System mode and verify. Do not choose Follow System while expecting the current color to remain permanent. Understanding the control source first prevents later reader adjustments from interfering with each other.
Check reader-page brightness separately
Open reading settings. If the current version offers Reader Night Dimming or a page-brightness option, enable it and adjust slightly. This changes the page display and may leave the system brightness slider unchanged. Return to the reference page and inspect whether whites are softened while pale-gray lines remain before dimming further.
Start near the original brightness at a relatively high value and compare in steps instead of dragging directly to the minimum. Excessive dimming can erase halftone dots, clothing folds, and background depth, making readers work harder. If the version lacks separate page dimming, use system brightness and the theme. Do not assume every installation has the same advanced panel.
Judge background and image colors separately
The background around a page affects edge contrast, but colors inside the image still come from the work. Judge black-and-white comics and color webtoons differently: preserve fine lines and gray tones in the former, and watch skin tones and shadows in the latter. Do not make the work hard to recognize merely to give menus a uniform color.
If reading settings offer background or margin options, first check whether they affect only the area outside the image. A large white border inside the source file may remain despite the theme change. Border cropping, image enhancement, and theme switching are separate operations. A darker appearance does not establish lossless cropping or improved clarity.
Recheck once in daylight and once at night
After nighttime adjustments, open the same page in normal light the next day. Very low page brightness may look dull in daylight and need resetting or switching. With per-book preferences, check whether another work retains its original configuration. With global settings, check both a black-and-white work and a color work.
A simple habit is enough: use system brightness for daytime clarity, dim pages at night as needed, and choose a menu theme you can identify easily. Complex saved values for every environment are unnecessary. Know which layer controls what so you can quickly restore a stable display when differences appear.
Watch the combined effect with system display assistance
The system may enable automatic brightness, Reduce White Point, nighttime color temperature, or other display assistance. These combine with the app's display. If the picture suddenly becomes yellow, too dark, or unusually contrasty, check system changes before adjusting ManYue. Repeated app changes without knowing the system state make restoration difficult.
Read several pages after adjusting and notice whether you squint, lean closer, or repeatedly refocus before deciding to keep the settings. Take breaks as needed and move to a better-lit position. If discomfort persists, pause reading rather than continuing to lower brightness. Clear pages and a relaxed posture are more useful than achieving a particular dark-mode value.
Frequently asked questions
Why are comic pages still white in a dark theme? The app theme and image content are different. White paper in a scan belongs to the image; dark menus do not automatically change every original page. If page dimming is offered, test it separately and inspect the details.
Why does the system slider stay unchanged after adjusting reader brightness? Independent page dimming may affect the reader display without changing system brightness. Read the option's description to understand its scope. An unchanged system slider does not mean the setting is ineffective.
Is it normal for a screenshot to differ from what I see? System brightness and some display-assistance effects may not appear identically in screenshots. Judge the actual reading image on the device rather than choosing someone else's brightness or color based on one screenshot.
