Book Isle enjambed-line reading: reconnect syntax before noting line-end pauses

Preserve poetic lines and punctuation, using two readings to distinguish syntactic continuation, line endings and personal pauses without treating display wraps as rhetorical evidence.

A poetic line ending does not necessarily complete a sentence. Select a short permitted passage in Book Isle, establish its lines, reconnect syntax across them and then record your experience of pauses. This concerns syntax versus poetic lineation, distinct from checking whether EPUB formatting preserves breaks. It assumes no automatic prosody analysis, enjambment marking or judgement of one correct performance.

Record poem identity, edition and genuine line boundaries

Choose a short poem with clear provenance and record title, author, edition, stanza and nearby wording, preserving the file. Use the existing poetry-formatting lesson to distinguish authorial/edition-preserved lines from screen-width wrapping. Mark uncertain boundaries unverified rather than using them as rhetorical evidence. Save only necessary excerpts when selection is supported, otherwise record locations manually without claiming OCR. Begin with two to four adjacent lines instead of flattening the whole poem, which would erase the line-end positions being compared.

Read original lines and test syntactic completion

Read the original lines once. Externally record each ending as a full stop, comma, no punctuation or another form, then assess whether syntax is complete. Absence of a full stop does not automatically establish enjambment, and a desire to continue does not justify deleting one. Ask whether subject, action, object or modification still needs the next line, citing particular words instead of “feels unfinished”. Oregon State University’s enjambment guide supplies the concept of syntax continuing across line boundaries, not an interpretation of this poem; its poetic examples are not reproduced here.

Separate line and sentence with an original miniature

Use the invented two-line example “我把未说完的话 / 留在门外”, roughly “The words I have not finished saying / I leave outside the door”. The slash marks this example’s line boundary, not original punctuation. The first line’s 把 construction awaits the action supplied by 留 and its location in the second, yielding a complete expression when joined. Note possible anticipation at the first ending without claiming an author-confirmed emotion. This is neither a published poet’s work nor software-generated analysis. A replacement miniature needs genuine syntactic continuation, not just an absent full stop.

Reconnect syntax on the second reading without replacing lines

Return to the passage and read its syntactic connections continuously. If helpful, write a joined paraphrase in personal notes while preserving original breaks, punctuation and word order. Compare it word by word to ensure joining has not lost a contrast or attached modification to the wrong object. Continuous understanding does not require never breathing at a line ending, nor permit submitting prose reflow as the original poem. Separate original excerpt from personal paraphrase with clear labels. Use available highlights/notes for locators, or an external record when those controls are unavailable.

Locate observations about pause effects

On a third reading of the original lines, record where you pause briefly, where you continue and which word becomes temporarily prominent. Identify these as personal reading attempts rather than treating different performances as app formatting errors or a contradictory poet. An authorised same-edition reading may be referenced separately with performer and clip identity, not treated as the author’s sole intention; audio is optional. No unconfirmed rhythm-scoring control is needed in Book Isle. Ordinary reading and notes suffice, with observations tied to particular lines/words rather than “more emotional”.

Preserve uncertainty when comparing interpretations

If a word can attach to the preceding or following line, record both connections and their supporting wording, checking adjacent stanzas for constraints. Do not invent missing subjects, punctuation or events to force a neat conclusion. A translation’s lineation may differ from the original; record editions separately rather than attributing a translated pause automatically to the source poem. Preserve both interpretations provisionally with current evidence and further locations. A personal paraphrase is not established authorial intention, and one performance does not assess the reader’s ability.

Retrieve the original evidence from its locator

Leave the passage and retrieve it by title, stanza, adjacent wording and recorded locator, recognising original lines before reading your paraphrase. Font changes add new display wraps, so percentages or screen-line numbers are only aids; content and original line identity take priority. Export important notes through supported means and inspect excerpt, syntactic paraphrase, pause observations and questions separately outside the app. Preserve the book separately; notes are not its complete backup. Share only necessary lawful quotations and identify invented examples so they cannot become misattributed poet quotations.

Exclude display wrapping before interpretation disputes

For moving line endings, inspect display wrapping first. For an incoherent joined reading, inspect syntax and original punctuation. For missing source wording, check poem, edition and excerpt boundaries instead of resetting reading progress. If different performances remain defensible, record evidence for each rather than marking one wrong automatically. Retain four traceable elements: original lines, syntactic connections, pause observations and uncertainties. The result supports further discussion, rather than a boundary-free summary or a claim that software confirmed every rhetorical device.
