Book Isle excerpts: keep highlights and notes, then make a quote card
Select original text, save highlights and personal notes, check quote-card wording and attribution, then share or save an image of the result.
On this page
After finishing a book, what deserves preservation is often not every highlight but a few passages that help you reconsider a question. Book Isle saves highlights, notes, and quote cards. This guide uses text you are authorized to use, moving from selection and review to a shared file.
First decide what to retain
Choose an EPUB or TXT with selectable text and find a passage of two or three sentences. Avoid selecting a whole chapter initially. A short selection is easier to check and better suited to a card. Write a specific question about it, such as “Why did this sentence change my view?” so the note connects to your reading purpose.
This text-selection workflow does not apply to every image-based page. Words in scanned PDFs or comics may look clear without a selectable text layer. Do not assume long-pressing provides the same menu. Practice with ordinary text first, and use the annotation tools actually offered by the PDF reader for PDFs.
Long-press to select, then verify the range
Long-press text in the body and adjust the selection to complete sentence boundaries. When the menu appears, reread the selection to ensure it has not lost a negation, condition, or second half of a sentence before highlighting. Color only marks text; it cannot fix an incomplete selection. An excerpt missing a crucial qualification is easily misunderstood later.
For the first pass, use one color for “worth revisiting.” Distinguish concepts, examples, and questions only when those purposes actually emerge. Dragging a long selection across pages may be awkward; split it into shorter excerpts with context. Repeated overlapping highlights just to color an entire page make the important points harder to see later.
Add your own explanation and save
Select the required text again, use “Note” or its equivalent, write your thoughts under “Add Note,” and tap “Save.” For example: “This separates cause and result; try the same approach in the next project review.” Such a comment helps your future self understand the reason for retaining a passage better than “Good” or “Important.”
After saving, leave the page and return to confirm that the highlight and note remain. Opening an input box and going back without saving may leave no formal record. Distinguish the original sentence from your own comment: the quotation is the author's expression, and the note is your interpretation. Do not share a rewritten sentence as the original.
Check and revise in the notes list
Find the record through the reader's notes entry or an available bookshelf notes entry. Check the title, chapter, selected text, and comment. If the comment is inaccurate, edit and save it. If the selection itself is wrong, return to the source first and decide whether to recreate it, rather than adding a vague explanation in the comment.
After each chapter, select one or two notes truly worth keeping so the list remains readable. Not every repeated highlight needs to stay, especially temporary marks from a first reading. Confirm the exact selected record before deleting. For important research, export a backup before a larger cleanup.
Create a quote card
In a text-selection menu supporting quote cards, open “Quote” or the corresponding card entry to preview it. Check completeness, author, and title before appearance. If “Edit” is available, adjust the styles offered by your version. Accurate content matters more than elaborate decoration, and an overly long excerpt may make the card difficult to read.
The card preview commonly provides actions such as “Share,” “Save Image,” and “Copy Text.” For the first practice, save one card to Photos or share it to a location you manage, then open the result and check clarity, clipped edges, and visible source information. Tapping Share only opens the system share sheet. You still need to choose a destination and complete its steps; the sheet appearing does not mean the file was saved.
Retain context and attribution before sharing
For private review, you can keep longer context. For public sharing, choose necessary short excerpts, credit the work and author, and avoid distributing a whole chapter or extensive content as a sequence of cards. Personal notes on cards may contain private information too. Check before sharing so that project names or other people's information intended only for yourself do not go out with them.
If author metadata is missing, check book details first rather than letting the card guess. When reliable information cannot be found, retain the title and version you can confirm and postpone public sharing. A quote card is a presentation format, not evidence of authorization, accuracy, or suitability for publication.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not select text with a long press? The current page may be an image, scanned content, or a format without the same selection mechanism. Compare with an ordinary EPUB first, then inspect that format's own annotation tools. Text recognition is not a default capability of every page.
Why did saving the image fail? Check system Photos permission and the save-result message. Grant necessary access and retry, or save to Files through the system share sheet. Open the final file to confirm rather than tapping repeatedly and creating duplicate cards in Photos.
Are notes written directly back into the original EPUB? These notes live in Book Isle's reading records, managed separately from the original EPUB file. Use an explicit data export to continue using them in another tool. Sending someone the ebook does not automatically include all your Book Isle notes.
Later review and preservation
To find a comment again, use Notes and full-text search; to retain complete reading records over the long term, continue with Exporting notes, highlights, and statistics. Start with one understandable excerpt that is findable and whose source can be checked, then build your reading-note habits gradually.
