Getting started
Read PDFs in Book Isle: find information with pages, contents and search
Use PDF page numbers, embedded contents and text search, distinguishing file pages from printed numbers and scanned images from a text layer.
On this page
PDF suits textbooks, papers, and material whose page layout must be preserved. Book Isle opens PDFs, but body-text search and chapter navigation still depend on text layers and navigation information inside the file. Using a document of roughly a dozen pages, this article establishes three ways to locate content: page numbers, contents, and search.
Choose a PDF you can verify
Prepare an unencrypted PDF or one whose authorized password you know, and keep the original. Note its total page count, whether the cover occupies a page, and where printed body numbering starts. If a cover and two contents pages precede the text, printed page 1 may be reader page 4. This offset affects later page-jump checks.
After import, open the first and last pages to confirm that the file is not merely a downloaded cover or truncated document. Clear-looking text in a scan may still be an image. Try selecting a short body passage to help determine whether searchable text exists. Failed selection may come from file structure or permissions rather than a Book Isle error.
Jump directly with a page number
Show the PDF reading tools and find Go to Page; some interfaces also open input when you tap the current page number. Enter a number within range, such as eight in a twenty-page document, and tap Go. Check the page content on arrival rather than only the changed number at the bottom.
To find printed page eight, first account for any cover-page offset and verify the footer. For a paper citation, you can record 'file page eleven, printed page eight' so it remains understandable in another reader. If you enter zero, a number beyond the page count, or nonnumeric characters, correct the input rather than deleting and reimporting the file.
Inspect the PDF's built-in outline
Open Contents in the reading tools. A file with an outline shows chapter entries that should jump to corresponding pages. No Contents or a similar message means the PDF supplies no usable bookmark navigation. An image of a contents page after the cover does not automatically become a clickable outline.
You can still navigate by page number and thumbnails. For handouts, consult the printed contents, jump to the corresponding page, and check its heading. Prefer a bookmarked version if the author supplies one. Opening Book Isle's Contents panel does not automatically generate an accurate chapter structure for scanned material.
Search for a distinctive phrase
Open search and enter a short, specific term in Search PDF Text, such as sample distribution, without complicated punctuation at first. Inspect result page numbers and context, then choose one. Very common words produce many results, while a pasted paragraph may fail because of line breaks, spaces, or special characters. A phrase of four to eight Chinese characters is usually easier for an initial check.
If no results appear, try another short term clearly visible on the page. If that also fails, check whether the document has a text layer. Scans, text inside diagrams, or abnormal font encoding may prevent direct search. For searchable scanned material, first use an authorized document tool to create a text-layer copy, check recognition accuracy, then import it into Book Isle.
Zoom for reading and mark positions
Zoom until formulas or footnotes are readable, then see whether you need to pan repeatedly from side to side. Fixed pages do not reflow with font size like EPUB, so excessive zoom increases movement. Landscape iPad suits wide tables; portrait suits single-page reading. Choose according to the current page's content.
If the current PDF tools offer highlighting or annotations, select a test sentence, save a short note, and exit and reopen to check it. For important material, also record the original filename and page number rather than relying only on a color mark. Text selection may be unavailable in image-based PDFs. Do not infer identical capabilities across annotation tools or claim changes were necessarily written back to the original PDF.
Complete a lookup exercise using three entry points
Choose a chapter and locate it three ways: outline, page number, and keyword search. Record which is fastest and which fails. For example, page numbers still work without an outline, while an outline narrows the chapter range when a term appears many times. The result is a method suited to this document, not a universal conclusion about every PDF.
After checking, return to the shelf and reopen the file to compare the restored position. If you replace it with a newer version, page numbers and content may change and need revalidation. Do not apply old notes to a new version without checking. Dates or version names for course materials are usually easier to manage than calling everything Latest Version.
Frequently asked questions
Why does jumping to page ten not match the printed page ten? Readers normally count the PDF's page sequence, while printed numbering may skip the cover, use Roman numerals, or restart with the body. Check one known position to establish the offset before jumping to the target.
Why does the outline work while search finds nothing? Outline information and the body-text layer are separate structures. A scanned file may have bookmark navigation without searchable text. Comparing a file known to have a text layer helps diagnose this faster.
Can PDF text automatically wrap like a novel? This PDF reader preserves a fixed layout. Zoom changes the displayed size of the entire page and usually does not rearrange each line like a novel. If the material is also available as EPUB, retain both formats: use PDF when original page numbers matter and EPUB for continuous text reading.

For managing two formats, see Organize multiple formats of one book; for finding concepts across several documents, see Library-wide full-text search. After this article, you should know whether the material has an outline and text layer and be able to find a page without repeatedly dragging a long progress bar.
