Files and reading checks
Book Isle between phone and iPad: two layouts for the same chapter
Adjust reading density on each screen, verify synced locations by chapter and text, and check notes after layout changes.
On this page
A phone suits short reading sessions; an iPad can suit longer ones. The same EPUB need not use identical type sizes, and screen page counts cannot establish matching progress. Set a baseline on one device, adjust the other and use chapters, text and notes to check continuity. Keep your existing WebDAV setup rather than reimporting the whole library for layout changes.
Confirm both devices use the same edition
Check title, author, translator and contents, particularly revised editions and identical titles. Matching covers do not prove matching structure: an added introduction or differently divided chapter can make similar percentages refer to different text. Find a distinctive first-chapter sentence on both devices.
Both devices also need actual access to the file. Local copies and remote catalogue entries can look similar, so note the source. Reading-data sync does not supply missing books. Obtain the same original through import or download first, rather than trying to establish a match by changing titles.
Establish a comparable phone layout
Open the EPUB's reading settings and inspect the type size, line spacing and margins actually available. Change type size first and read a whole paragraph before altering other values. Changing everything together makes it difficult to identify whether size, line length or empty space caused discomfort.
Choose a chapter with short and long paragraphs and check whether you can follow the next line naturally. Values are personal starting points, not universal settings. Record your preference or take a screenshot. Use a reflowable EPUB for this test; fixed-layout PDF needs separate zoom considerations.
Set reading density again on iPad
Open the same chapter in your usual orientation. A larger screen does not require the greatest possible amount of text. If long lines cause you to lose your place, adjust available margins and type size and read a long paragraph. Work with actual controls rather than searching for unverified column or pagination options.
Finish one orientation, then rotate. Total screen pages normally change with the amount of text per screen. Check diagrams separately without shrinking the entire book's body text for one large image. Keep a PDF counterpart for comparison when complex layout matters.
Verify continuity using the original text
On the phone, stop at a clear paragraph, note the chapter and opening words, leave the reader and sync through your existing process. Sync the iPad, then reopen the book from its shelf. Compare the passage and context, not identical screen page numbers.
For a mismatch, check sync destination, direction and edition, then confirm connectivity. Avoid repeatedly changing both devices' progress at once because the final update becomes difficult to identify. Finish one baseline before checking the other to separate layout differences from data transfer issues.
Observe whether settings affect the other device
Book Isle's public description includes reading-settings sync, so some layout choices may change after syncing. Observe what happens in your version. Do not promise that every setting is device-specific, or infer from one unchanged setting that all settings always remain independent.
If you prefer different densities, record both preferences and test one unimportant type-size adjustment. Restore recorded settings when necessary rather than deleting books. If your version shares a particular value, choose a compromise or adjust it before reading, working within that actual behaviour.
Use bookmarks and notes for stable references
For the same edition, chapters, bookmarks and notes with quotations are easier to interpret across screens than a phone page number. Return to a saved note on both devices and check a reasonable location. Keep short original quotations so orientation and layout changes do not obscure your intended passage.
A few lines of difference after reflow may still preserve the same context; a different chapter calls for checking edition and records. Do not rebuild every bookmark because page counts changed. Externally edited copies and different translations require fresh verification because old references need not fit new text.
Finish with a complete round trip
Read a short section on iPad, leave and sync, then check the phone. Verify text, notes and familiar layout so you understand each change. One-way success does not fully establish your handoff routine; a round trip more readily reveals source and direction confusion.
When switching devices, leave the reader, wait for a clear sync result and then open the target device. Preserve records and originals during problems. Do not change layout, replace editions and reset sync simultaneously. Check content identity, location and comfortable layout separately to identify what actually needs correction.
