Check TXT paragraphs in Book Isle: distinguish hard wraps from paragraph breaks

Use controlled copies to inspect short lines, blanks and dialogue, retaining the original and reading anchors before external cleanup.

Some TXT files contain a hard newline every few dozen characters, creating short fragments on wider screens, while other breaks mark real paragraphs. Diagnose the file before external cleanup. This is not encoding troubleshooting or an assumed one-click reader repair; preserve the original and work on copies.

Confirm readable characters first

Choose a short TXT with correct characters and punctuation, separating encoding from line-break issues. Preserve file identity and create a clearly named test copy. Record chapter/text anchors and back up existing notes before experiments rather than deleting the original annotated book.

Observe behaviour at different widths

Compare a few passages at available widths or font sizes. Fixed breaks after the same character may be hard newlines; changing breaks may be screen wraps. Test a longer prose passage when short sentences are ambiguous, changing only a few layout conditions at a time.

Inspect actual newlines in the source

Inspect the same passage in your own text editor, using visible line-ending markers if available or cursor/selection behaviour otherwise. Match the same file rather than different source editions. A displayed reader break is not automatically a source newline.

Identify genuine paragraph boundaries

Check chapter openings, speaker changes and topic transitions, noting this file’s actual single- or blank-line conventions. Mark poems, lists and addresses as protected structures. Do not apply a universal replacement rule merely because many short lines look similar.

Protect dialogue and verse

Examine alternating speakers before merging breaks; punctuation alone may not preserve who is speaking. Treat verse, scripts and lists separately and keep protected-region notes outside the reader if needed. The goal is reliable structure, not the smallest possible number of short lines.

Test cleanup on one small passage

If a passage clearly contains fixed-width hard wraps, clean only that passage externally while preserving real paragraphs. Recheck English words, numbers and units for accidental joining. Save a new copy and compare sentence by sentence for missing or duplicated characters and quotes before any wider replacement.

Keep imported test-copy identity clear

Import the new copy and inspect duplicate or merge prompts rather than forcing replacement. Keep comparable identities using available choices. Open the same chapter and anchor in both, checking wraps, blanks and dialogue. A changed text file is not merely a display-setting change, and old positions may not map automatically.

Verify positions and notes independently

Keep the old book and verify an important note against chapter and text in the new copy. Recreate a reminder manually when needed and label the edition relationship instead of copying old page numbers. Reading-data sync does not automatically distribute every externally modified TXT file.

Use counterexamples to detect over-cleaning

Test a poem, list or dialogue passage for damage caused by cleanup. Return to the original and narrow the operation when needed rather than patching a flawed copy. Record the exact scope; success on ordinary prose does not justify deleting every newline throughout the book.

Finish with two chapters and two widths

Check an early and later chapter at two widths for stable paragraph identity and responsive screen wraps. Retain original, edited copy and review date before any library-wide replacement. Accepting some short lines can be safer than incorrect mass merging in a complex book; no universal TXT rule is claimed.

Checked on October 27, 2026 against the official Book Isle App Store listing and Apple’s public version information: current version 1.1.3, requiring iOS / iPadOS 15.6 or later. This is a file-quality checking workflow. Import, text extraction, layout preservation and reading-data sync are distinct capabilities. Readers supply their files and references; controls depend on the installed version. No step-by-step physical-device testing across all sample formats is claimed.
