VectorPaint clock faces: check ticks, numerals and hands manually

Draw a static clock illustration, using a centre reference, tick checklist and chosen time to verify its geometry.

A clock face makes errors in repeated marks and hand directions easy to notice. Design a static round clock with a centre reference, ticks and numerals. It does not run; verify all marks and the depicted time manually.

Choose the time and number of marks

Depict 10:10 with twelve main hour marks and no minute ticks initially. On an 800 by 800 pixel canvas, draw the outer circle and horizontal/vertical centre references. Write out the hour order, confirming 12 at top, 3 right, 6 bottom and 9 left. Mark the common centre temporarily before positioning details.

Start with four cardinal marks

Place marks at 12, 3, 6 and 9 with comparable insets. Check their common centre directions and standardise weight and length before adding others. Stroke caps affect apparent length, so inspect the result rather than just endpoint positions. Use a consistent construction method throughout, whether small rectangles or stroked paths.

Complete the remaining hour marks

Add two marks within each quadrant. Duplicate, rotate and position manually using the controls available in your version rather than requiring a circular-array feature. Check that marks point toward the centre and share a visual radius. Count clockwise and counterclockwise to confirm twelve marks; overlapping duplicates can otherwise lead to a mistaken extra mark.

Position numerals visually

Use either four cardinal numerals or all twelve with one font and size. Optical positioning may differ from simple centring because 12 is wider and individual digits carry different weight. Keep numerals upright and consistently separated from ticks. Recheck all positions after changing fonts rather than correcting only the most obvious numeral.

Draw both hands for the chosen time

The minute hand points to 2 for ten minutes; the hour hand sits slightly past 10. Draw a longer minute hand and shorter hour hand sharing the centre, with sufficient contrast. A wider hour hand can help identification without covering numerals. Cover their join with a small topmost circle, hide temporary references and read the depicted time again.

Check time recognition after reduction

Save the original and compare normal and small exports for readable time and distinct ticks. Remove secondary decoration before sacrificing hand-length differences. A text label can provide a cross-check. This remains a static illustration. For another time, make an independent copy and change the hands, including the hour hand’s gradual position, without shifting numerals or centre.

Test the hands with another time

Make a separate 3:30 version, with minute hand at 6 and hour hand halfway between 3 and 4. Keep centre, ticks and numerals unchanged. Hide the cap to inspect common starts. Read both times before judging balance; changing angles for appearance also requires updating any stated time so wording and diagram remain consistent.

Diagnose hands that seem misaligned

Hide the centre cap to inspect shared starts, then check the hour hand’s non-integer position. Diagnose uneven ticks quadrant by quadrant. Preserve editable text while investigating font changes. A distorted outer circle may indicate non-uniform scaling; restore its proportion and recheck every element. Final hand positions must depict the chosen time, not merely look balanced.
