Evidence and review boundaries

ManYue documentary-comic reading: quotation, reconstruction and inference

Trace one documentary claim through notes and sources, distinguishing records, artistic reconstruction and reader interpretation rather than treating drawn detail as historical proof.

Documentary comics can make every garment and line seem documented after records become pictures. Choose one non-sensitive, traceable claim in ManYue and inspect how the work describes sources and reconstruction. This is not full historical authentication, and realism is not verification. The reader separately checks lawful public sources.

Choose one bounded claim

Choose a construction date, public-event order or document title that can be checked, avoiding private allegations and medical or legal judgements. Record edition, chapter, wording and corresponding image location without calling every detail factual. Distinguish assertion, reported testimony and stated possibility. Quote only what is necessary and retain full context. Audit this evidence chain rather than attempting a verdict on the entire work; bounded scope makes the result explainable.

Find the work’s source and reconstruction statements

Inspect chapter notes, end references, author statements and image credits for an explicit connection. A long bibliography does not source every spoken line; mark absent mapping unspecified. Preserve qualifications about reconstructed dress, scenes or dialogue. Creative credits differ from evidentiary sources, so identifying the artist does not establish a fact’s basis. For external explanations, keep access date and location without assuming local offline inclusion or permanent availability.

Classify visual details by evidentiary status

Separate explicitly sourced information, declared reconstruction and unresolved detail. In an invented case, a record of a morning meeting does not document the comic’s blue cup or window-side seat. Unknown is not fraudulent; the available source may simply not establish it. Anxiety inferred from expression belongs in reader interpretation, not the archive. Classification preserves narrative value without letting a persuasive image silently enlarge the evidence.

Check the actual source passage

Follow lawful public references and verify title, author, date and passage, excluding namesakes. A catalogue entry is not full-text access; identify abstract-only limits. Read surrounding qualifications, objections and revisions. Do not bypass access restrictions or equate a search snippet with the document. If access fails, retain an unverified status. You may still analyse the comic’s expression without claiming the external chain has been fully checked.

Check qualifications in quotation and paraphrase

Compare the comic with source qualifications such as approximately, possibly or recalled by someone. Possibility does not become certainty, and one sample does not establish all cases. For declared paraphrase or compression, compare propositions rather than word overlap. Preserve negation in your own notes too. Log agreement, difference and unresolved explanation without judging an entire work from one wording change or supplying support absent from the source.

Analyse reconstruction as expression, not a record

Discuss viewpoint, expression and space in declared reconstruction and how they affect a reader, without using those artistic choices to prove a historical person’s thoughts. Unspecified direct dialogue is narrative wording, not automatically a verbatim transcript. Keep fact and expression questions in separate paragraphs; they can have different answers. This avoids dismissing all artistic treatment because some details are unverified or abandoning factual checks because you enjoy the artwork.

Keep references to both work and source

Use supported page references or an external locator for the comic, and specific passage, item or stable title plus access conditions for the source. Leave the comic and return using the record, checking that the original wording, note and image still correspond to this same claim. Keep date and necessary short quotations for changing pages without republishing entire protected documents. Recheck notes and reconstruction statements after edition changes. Exclude private accounts, paid-access tokens and server credentials from shared records.

Finish one bounded evidence conclusion

Finish with the claim, work’s explanation, source-access scope, actual support and reconstructed or unknown detail. Realistic art is not authentication, and a bibliography does not map itself to each sentence. Leave insufficient evidence unverified instead of turning uncertainty into affirmation or rejection. Answer only what supports this claim and retain one useful follow-up question rather than stamping the entire documentary work reliable or unreliable.
